I read about the Spring Reading Thing over on Callapidder Days, a charming blog written by a somewhat geeky stay-at-home mother of two. Since everyone in the GeoKs family is an avid reader, joining this challenge seemed to meet the criteria for the "other adventures" we occasionally bring into our mostly about geocaching blog.
My planned reading list for this oh-so-changeable season is a rather lengthy one. Throw in the fact that most of the books I read are borrowed from the very busy Signal Hill branch of the Calgary Public Library and it’s quite likely that my actual reading list will not match the plan!
Why library books instead of a copy purchased at the nearest bookstore? One reason is convenience: the Signal Hill library is less than a 15 minute walk from our house. Plus, if you know the name of the book you want to read, the library offers a terrific service, whereby library staff locates a copy of the book and holds it for you to pick up! No extra charge for this time-saving service. Another reason is childhood conditioning: growing up in a very small town in BC, one of the main sources of entertainment was the weekly visit to the library. And last, but definitely not least, I’m cheap!! Compare the $10 annual cost for a library card to the many hundreds of dollars I would spend each year to buy enough books to feed my reading appetitie and the decision is easy. Now that’s not to say I don’t buy books; I do! In fact my favourite Air Miles reward is the $25 gift card for Indigo bookstores. But I tend to limit my purchases to reference books, books I’ve already read and would love to share with family and friends, or highly recommended reads.

I just noticed that all but the first title on this list are non-fiction, which seems to be the trend for me in 2009. But every couple weeks I seem to need a fiction fix, so watch for more fiction titles to appear in my "Books Read by Denise in 2009" sidebar.
