Hiking Scotland – Old Man of Stoer

On December 12, 2024February 21, 2025 By GeoKsIn United KingdomLeave a comment

The gently rolling loop from Stoer Head lighthouse to the Old Man of Stoer and back was a good follow-up to the previous day's more demanding trek to the summit of Suilven. Clocking in at 7.5 km (4.5 miles) and a total elevation gain of just 284 meters (134 net), I rate it family-friendly.

Suilven is the western-most peak in Assynt and makes the list of Scotland's "Grahams." At more than 20 km and over 1,000 meters elevation gain, it was our "biggest" hiking day during our two weeks of guided hiking in Scotland.

Stac Pollaidh is a "Graham" with views of the Summer Isles and nearby lochs. It's a solid half-day hike, with the opportunity for a lochside picnic before or after.

Key moments from our first "Corbett" hike include encountering a school group and their guides; hiking in the clouds, and a mountain rescue.

Out and About in Inverness, Scotland

Inverness was our third stop during our 3-week UK vacation, spring 2024. We had an afternoon to explore the city, opting for a meandering walk, photography, and a stop at an art exhibition.
