We walked 7.7 km, with 150 meters of elevation change during our 3.5 hours out and about in Qeqetarsuaq and its immediate vicinity. In addition to a short waterfall hike along a trail bordered by abundant wildflowers, we enjoyed the story behind Qeqetarsuaq's bright green football pitch. And the black sand beach with icebergs floating offshore was a photographic highlight of the trip.
After getting out on the water, our disappointment at being denied the opportunity to visit the Ilulissat Icefjord UNESCO World Heritage Site evaporated. We consider Kayaking Disko Bay our best sea kayaking experience to-date.
While optional helicopter excursions underway for those passengers who paid extra, the rest of us traveled by zodiac to the discovery site of the Qilakitsoq mummies. After a talk about the significance of the discovery, we re-boarded zodiacs for a cruise among icebergs floating down Uummannaq Fjord.
The town center is rich with history. And the surrounding residential neighborhoods consist of colorful box houses stepping up from the sea. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning out and about in Uummannaq, Greenland.
A 5 km paddle under sunny skies was a wonderful way to start a long afternoon of adventure in West Greenland.
